Voyageur Events
PRESS RELEASE April 14, 2008
Connecting with the Path of the
Voyageur David Thompson Brigades and Canadian
Heritage Rivers Initiative celebrates our past.
The Path of the Voyageur explores
the opportunity for cultural and recreational travel through our district.
On Tuesday April 22nd, the regional initiative will host a discovery
session in Fort Frances. Meetings in Atikokan and Kenora, have brought
the region together to discover attractions and experiences that can be
promoted as regional opportunities. From bog walks, to museums,
travel routes and heritage rivers, the Rainy River District offers many
opportunities for visitors and communities. The Fort Frances session is
being held from 10 until 3 pm in the meeting room at the Memorial Sports
Centre.
The Canadian Heritage Rivers Initiative,
seeks the extension of the Boundary Waters-Voyageur Waterway located in
Quetico Provincial Park. The extension will expand to create a true
Voyageur route with Old Fort William Historic Park facilitating eastward
expansion and the Fort Frances Museum facilitating expansion to the west.
In June the district is host to
a unique opportunity to celebrate this important waterway- The David Thompson
Brigades- 160 Voyageurs traveling 63 days for 3600 kilometers. The
communities of Rainy River, Emo and Fort Frances will be hosting these
Voyageurs. Activities in the planning include canoe races, entertainer
Rodney Brown, orienteering and discovering the Rainy River.
The Fort Frances Museum will be
hosting an information session Tuesday April 22nd at 7pm. Brian Grimsey,
Senior Planner with CHRS will be discussing the CHRS program. A presentation
outlining the David Thompson brigades and local activities will also be
presented.

Community Arts & Heritage Education Project
Arts Education in Your Community
Join us on April 12th 10-12 for an initial site visit in Fort Frances.
WHO: CAHEP and your community – School Boards, educators, artist and heritage
programmers, arts and heritage organizations, library staff, social service organizations,
youth workers, children, youth, seniors and arts & heritage related community groups.
These meetings will be an informal way for CAHEP to learn about your community and the work you are doing in arts education so we can build on what you already have in place. This also enables all interested partners to ask questions of CAHEP. It will create an opportunity for your community to custom design what you are interested in, from the “CAHEP Knowledge Wagon” in arts education. CAHEP is interested in serving your communities needs, and we realize that each community, each organization and every individual within communities is unique. This is why we need your community to choose what projects, training and mentoring, programs or new ideas you would like to explore in arts education. We are there to work with you and for you, and to share the knowledge we have gleaned over many years of hands-on experiential work in the field of arts education.

Residential Schools: The Red Lake Story
June - August 2008
We all remember what it was like to go to school in the 1950s. School
work, sports and other extra curricular activities, friends and fun
filled our time. However, there was another side to education at that
time. This is examined through the exhibit Residential Schools: The
Red Lake Story. Young aboriginal children were sent away from their
families to live and learn at Residential Schools. This exhibit
illustrates the new lives these student had to become accustomed to and
what their school-life was like. Quotes from survivors and photographs
bring this exhibit to life.
Residential Schools: The Red Lake Story is an exhibit from the Red Lake Heritage Centre.
